Job Description

Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) is the nation’s largest organization exclusively representing the black college community. TMCF member-schools include the publicly- supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and several Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs).

The Director of Human Resources will be a strategic thought partner to TMCF’s Executive Management team and will be responsible for leading and developing TMCF’s Human Resources (HR) function. The ideal candidate will be very hands-on and actively engaged with personnel; a person with high energy and a sincere dedication to TMCF’s mission and vision.

TMCF’s Director of Human Resources develops and implements HR policies and procedures regarding recruitment and onboarding, training and development, compensation and job evaluation, pay and benefits administration, employee retention, administration of personnel disciplinary actions and terminations, and labor relations and grievances issues. The Director of Human Resources will also have the responsibility of managing all HR aspects of TMCF’s national internship program, where HBCU students become temporary salaried employees for the duration of their time as interns and/or TMCF scholars. Included within the foregoing responsibilities are the related administrative duties.

Performance Expectations: 
The Director of Human Resources is expected to do the following:

  • Develop and administer various human resources plans and procedures for all company personnel.
  • Plan, organize, and control all activities of the division. Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems.
  • Implement and annually update the compensation program; rewrite job descriptions as necessary; conduct annual salary surveys and develops merit pool (salary budget); analyze compensation; monitor the performance evaluation program and revise as necessary.
  • Develop, recommend, implement and revise personnel policies and procedures; prepare and maintain handbook on policies and procedures (Team Manual); perform benefits administration to include claims resolution, change reporting, approving invoices for payment, annual re-evaluation of policies for cost-effectiveness, information activities program and cash flow.
  • Conduct recruitment effort for all exempt, nonexempt and temporary workers; write and place advertisements for job opportunities; work with supervisors to screen and interview candidates; conduct background and reference checks; extend job offers; conduct new- employee orientation and onboarding process; monitor career-path program and employee relations counseling; manage employee professional improvement and separation/termination processes and conduct exit interviews.
  • Establish and maintain department records and reports.
  • Maintain organizational charts and employee records.
  • Evaluate reports, decisions, and results of department initiatives in relation to established goals.
  • Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements in the efficiency of departments and services performed.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local labor and employment laws.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current industry trends and changes in applicable laws/regulations; participate in HR seminars/refresher training at least once, annually.

Special Demands

TMCF Human Resource division is currently a department of one. The ideal candidate should be prepared to serve as the sole HR practitioner for the organization. Additional support will be discussed once the incumbent has determined a need and a business case can be made for additional hire(s).

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • HRCI, SHRM, or any other accredited HR certification preferred.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees, students, senior staff, corporate and nonprofit executives.
  • Clear understanding of the importance of and commitment to maintaining the confidentiality of information shared with and kept by Human Resources.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multitask, and handle changing priorities.
  • Strong technology skills in word processing and database management.
  • Must be fluent in MS Office Suite for Mac including PowerPoint and Excel, and Google Chrome OS.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Ability to maintain composure/comport oneself professionally in stressful situations.
  • Committed to learning with the ability to think strategically and analytically.
  • Self-motivated; able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate ability to be resourceful and dependable.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively as well as the ability to work independently, in a busy, deadline-driven environment.

Compensation:

$70,000 – $75,000

Manages Others:

No; however, this could change.
