Scholarship Overview

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), and BetterHelp are proud to offer financial assistance to outstanding students attending public or private Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs). Four (4) scholars will be selected to receive a one-year scholarship up to $5,000 ($2,500 per semester) for the 2021-2022 academic school year, which can only be applied to verifiable costs associated with average tuition and usual fees.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be enrolled as a graduate student at a Historically Black College and Universities (HBCU) during the 2021- 2022 academic school year.
  • Must be an African American student or student of African Descent student.
  • Must major in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or Marriage and Family Therapy
  • Current cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
  • Able to demonstrate leadership abilities.
  • Able to demonstrate a financial need.
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident with a valid permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551.

How to Apply

All Applicants Must:

  • Provide a copy of the 2021- 2022 FAFSA Student Aid Report.
  • Provide the transcript (official or unofficial) for your most recently completed academic term-this should include your end of Fall/ 2020-2021 grades and cumulative GPA.
  • Please provide an email address for one recommender to complete a character reference form. They will be required to answer three questions regarding your character reference.
  • Answer the following essay questions (Maximum of 500 words per question):
    • What would you change about our current mental healthcare system to make it more accessible to communities of color?
    • How has your personal life experience fueled your desire to be a therapist?
